Buttonhead

published in knittyspin in March 2010: free!

This is a handspun-friendly, any-gauge hat pattern, worked top-down - the gauge is measured once there's enough area to do so, and the shape is formed based on that gauge - no swatching needed, and the same basic hat can be made in all kinds of different yarns for very different looks.

For custom sizing, by simply increasing to different widths, this base pattern can make a cloche style, a beret style, or a super slouchy style hat! It all comes together at the bottom with a buttoning brim - a 3 inch flap which fastens to be fitted to the wearer's head, with 1, 2, 3, or more buttons, depending on gauge and personal preference.

The stats:

Size: cloche[beret, super slouchy] styles, easily customized to preferred size, fitted to head with buttons

Yarn/Gauge: Any weight for any gauge, needles to match, yardage depends on weight/size

Needles: Set of double points and a 16" circular of the same size, to match yarn weight

Skills needed: Knitting around on double points and a circular, basic increases and decreases
